If the Start button is not available can I shut down or restart Windows?

  1. Close all open windows (or place the focus on the desktop)
  2. Press Alt-F4 (bring up the Shut Down Windows dialog box)
  3. Select an option (Restart or Shut Down) and press Enter.

Alt-F4 closes the currently active window.  This command is the equivalent of selecting Start, Shut Down IF the focus is currently on the desktop (as opposed to an open window) or IF no windows are open.

Can I get rid of the password box that appears when the computer starts up?

Tweak UI will solve the problem, or you can do the following:

  1. When you see the login dialog box, enter a user name and password, if you haven't already.
  2. Open Control Panel
  3. Double-click the Passwords icon
  4. Click the Change Windows Password button on the Change Passwords tab
  5. Type your password in the Old Password text box
  6. Press Tab
  7. Type your password again in the New Password text box and press Enter

You'll see a dialog box telling you that your password has been changed.
