Creating an emergency startup disk:

What, you didn't create your Emergency Startup Disk when you loaded Windows, you can create it now.

  1. Open Control Panel folder
  2. Select the Add/Remove Programs option
  3. Select the Startup Disk tab
  4. Click on the Create Disk button
  5. Follow the instructions

Scan & Defragment your hard drive monthly

ScanDisk is a utility that will check the integrity of the files stored on your hard drive.  It will be able to repair most of them automatically.  A thorough ScanDisk MAY give you some advance warning if your drives are beginning to have problems (sorry, can't make any guarantees here).

Disk Defragmenter is a utility that should also be run once a month (I'm not going to explain here - just try it).

I would suggest running ScanDisk first (Standard most of the time - Thorough say every 3-4 months) followed by Disk Defragmenter.

Note:  This little operation will generally go smoother if you turn off your Screen Saver first.

Both utilities will be found under Start Button --> Programs --> Accessories --> Systems Tools.
