First we protect our computer
Install ZoneAlarm
While WinXP users already have a built-in firewall, I still recommend installing and using ZoneAlarm until they are SURE that their computer is clean of all malware. This is because ZoneAlarm allows us to see Internet traffic that’s being initiated from WITHIN our computer. The latest version of ZoneAlarm (version 5) apparently has some problems as of this writing (June 2004). You might try finding version 4 if possible.
Optional: Install WinPatrol
WinPatrol is a handy little utility that will watch your computer for programs that install themselves. This if fine when the program is something you purchased, it's not fine when it's a piece of spyware that you didn't even realize you had come in contact with. Some people will probably find WinPatrol annoying, however.
Install AVG Anti-Virus Software
Note: Norton, McAfee, or Your Favorite Virus Program will do just fine.
